Ebola Virus Outbreak

Ebola Outbreak update 11th September 2014

The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest Ebola outbreak in history.  As of 6th  September 2014, 4269 (probable, confirmed and suspected) cases and 2288 deaths have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.  The number of cases being reported from these countries has been increasing in recent weeks, with no evidence that the outbreak is under control yet.  Nigeria and Senegal are also affected by imported cases.

What are the signs and symptoms of Ebola?

Ebola illness usually has a sudden onset between 2 and 21 days after exposure to the virus.  The initial signs and symptoms include:

  • Fever (38.6C/101.5F or higher)
  • Weakness
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting

If you have recently travelled to one of these countries and have any of the symptoms listed above – please do not attend the practice.  Please phone reception on 6712122 and one of our receptionists will arrange for you to speak to a doctor.  Further information is available at www.hse.ie.
